“Centuries” is one of Fall Out Boy’s biggest hits, and it’s also one of their boldest songs.
Songwriter Justin Tranter recently spoke about the song at Spirit Day, and he revealed that it’s about trans pioneer Marsha P. Johnson.
“I want every LGBTQ person to know that our ideas are mainstream. We have stories to tell and people will fucking listen,” Tranter said before performing the song.
Johnson was a veteran of the Stonewall riots, and also founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries).
This revelation only serves to make the lyrics to the song even more powerful.
“Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me, for centuries
Just one mistake
Is all it will take
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries”
