The music industry has gone through some dramatic changes since the days when MTV ruled the airwaves. At one point in time getting your music video played on MTV was like the holy grail of accomplishments for musicians, but now that the world has changed there are other ways for artists to bring their music videos to the general public.
But still, anyone who used to sit through MTV’s Total Request Live on a daily basis can’t deny that music video countdown shows on the network brought a certain element of excitement to the table that can’t be duplicated.
Over the past few years MTV’s ratings have been on the decline, and now the network is embracing its past as it looks toward the future.
The New York Times reports that a new studio is being built in Times Square, and MTV plans to bring Total Request Live back in October.
Initial plans for the show call for it to start off as an hour long program, but it could possibly be extended to two or three hours. Carson Daly will not be returning to host the show, and instead TRL will rely on five different co-hosts, one of which will be DJ Young Fly.
The network is also hoping to hold live performances in Times Square, along with concerts in an alleyway behind the Viacom building.
The show will integrate interactive content through social media services such as Snapchat and Instagram.
Total Request Live aired from 1998 to 2008, and it looks like we will find out if the show has what it takes to survive in 2017 in just a few months.
